A proposed citywide bicycle network in Gold Coast, Australia, could be derailed after it emerged that there was no system on the market providing both bikes and helmets.
The bike exchanges used in European cities including Paris, Lyon and Barcelona, do not require helmets. But in Queensland, all cyclists must wear helmets.
Gold Coast Tourism CEO Martin Winter told The Bulletin he would oversee a study into the feasibility of the bike exchanges. Mr Winter said the helmet oversight would have to be sorted out.
"I think helmets is the big issue here and we'll have to try and find a way to work through it," said Mr Winter. "I'm not sure what specific systems there are out there but we'll see how we can get around it.
