Bicycle Network is one of the largest cycling membership organisations in the world. For decades BN supported Australia's mandatory helmet law, but after consulting their members and the public, and receiving submissions from academics and other experts, Bicycle Network has adopted a policy supporting reform of helmet law across Australia.
Bicycle Network CEO Craig Richards said that bike riding is languishing in Australia and we need to rethink our helmet policy.
“Australia is one of only two countries in the world with fully enforced mandatory helmet law. The number of people who ride a bike isn’t increasing and there has been no decrease in the number of bike rider fatalities. It’s clear that our bike policies aren’t working, so it’s important that we review everything,” Mr Richards said. https://www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/newsroom/2018/10/31/change-australias-helmet-laws/
There has been lively debate since BN announced their policy change and Bicycle Network is not backing off, publishing articles on their website further clarifying their support for reform, e.g. https://www.bicyclenetwork.com.au/newsroom/2018/11/02/victims-deserve-support-whatever-they-wear/ "We will now continue to push for this change and it will be part of all on going campaigns and appropriate government submissions."
