Dublin bike scheme set for tenfold expansion

So successful has been the Dublin bike hire scheme that it is to be expanded from 500 to 5,000 bikes in the next 5 years. The number of bike stations will rise from 40 to about 300, covering the city's suburbs as well as the central area.

The bike scheme, which has been operating since September 2009, has attracted more than 47,000 subscribers, making it one the most popular bike hire schemes in the world. It has thus far been funded by advertising company JC Decaux.

Helmet use is a matter of personal choice in Dublin. While some people wear helmets to use the hire bikes, most people do not.
